Coaching Team
At Commons Jiujitsu, our coaches form the heart of our BJJ programs, which is why we take selecting them so seriously.
Experience matters, whether that comes from years on the competition circuit or years of teaching, but it’s only part of what we look for. Every coach on our team shares our belief that jiu-jitsu is a way to develop the whole person, helping each student grow into a better version of themselves on and off the mats.
We also hold our coaches to a high standard of conduct, in how they teach and train in the gym and in how they carry themselves outside it, so that students can trust the people guiding them.

Amirul
Head Coach
BJJ Black Belt
16 years on the mats. 13 of them spent coaching — white belts to black belts, side by side.
Amirul has one of the deepest technical libraries in jiujitsu, but ask anyone who’s trained under him and they’ll tell you first about his patience. Gentle, unhurried, the kind of teacher who makes both adults and kids fall in love with this art rather than intimidate them out of it.
On the competitive side, his results speak plainly: podium finishes at the SEA Games, the Asian Championships, and across multiple organisations.
There’s no one more suitable to lead the room at Commons Jiujitsu.

Daryl
Head Competition Coach
BJJ Black Belt
11 years on the mats and 4 years of coaching, Daryl leads the competition training at Commons Jiujitsu with a system that is uncompromising, purposeful and deeply athlete-centred. He may come across as stoic and stern at first, but ask those who trained under him and they’ll attest to the dedication toward his athletes behind his ways.
Over a short span of time, he has developed athletes from their white-belt beginnings into some of Singapore’s and the region’s strongest competitors. Under his guidance are SEA Games medallists, IBJJF Asian Champions and ADCC Champions.
As a competitor himself, he is a SJJIF 2025 World Champion, IBJJF Medalist, and podium finished in multiple organizations both locally as well as regionally.
